Digital Receipts

When you use a payment card for the first time with a Square seller, you are asked on the point of sale device if you would like to receive a digital receipt or a printed receipt (if the seller has connected a receipt printer). If you opt to receive a digital receipt, you will be prompted to enter your email address or phone number.

At this point, the email address or phone number is attached to that payment card so you won’t need to re-enter your contact information to receive digital receipts for future purchases with Square Sellers. The next time you opt for a digital receipt from a Square Seller, the email address or phone number attached to your payment card will partially hidden (e.g., e*****@gmail.com) on the checkout screen. This way, you only need to confirm the delivery method, without the need to enter this information after every purchase.

How can I change my email address or phone number for digital receipts?

If you provide an email address or phone number to receive a digital receipt from a Square Seller, this information will be pre-populated, but redacted (e.g., e****@gmail.com, or ** *** 1234 ) on the receipt screen for you to confirm during future purchases from Square Sellers. You can edit the pre-populated email at the point of sale by tapping the field and entering new information.

Note: Square doesn’t share your contact information with sellers to whom you haven’t directly given your information. Even when you provide your email address or phone number for a digital receipt after making a purchase at a Square Seller, your contact details are not visible to them. When a printed receipt is available, we may show an obfuscated email (e.g., e**@gmail.com) on the checkout screen.

How do I check the transaction details?

If the Square seller emailed or texted you a receipt, you can always check transaction details using Square’s Receipt search.

What if I received a receipt that wasn’t meant for me?

If you’d like to unlink an email address from a payment card for emailed receipts, you can click Not Your Receipt? at the bottom of your Square receipt or contact us.

Why am I receiving a receipt not meant for me?

There are several ways that your email or phone number may have been mistakenly connected with a purchase you didn’t make:

  • If a customer shares a credit or debit card with other people in their family.

  • If an individual who isn’t the owner of the card (i.e., a spouse, or friend) borrowed the credit or debit card and entered their own email at the time of purchase.

  • If a customer made an error typing their email or phone number at the time of purchase.

  • If a Square seller accidentally enters an email address that isn’t the customer’s.

  • If an individual made a purchase on behalf of someone else and enters the other person’s email address as the destination of a receipt, etc.

Note: If your email address or phone number for receipt delivery was entered with a mistake, let us know and we can unlink this information from your payment card so you can enter the correct contact information to receive your receipts next time you visit a Square seller.
