Update your Taxpayer Identification Number
About your Taxpayer Identification Number
A Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is the number used to file taxes with the IRS. Your TIN could be either an Employer Identification Number (EIN) or Social Security Number (SSN). To ensure accurate tax reporting for you or your business, and to prevent any IRS withholding, it is very important that you update your Square account to match IRS records.
If your TIN does not match the IRS records, Square is required to issue a B Notice to your account to correct your TIN.
Before you begin
You can review or update the taxpayer identification information you provided to Square at any time directly from your Square Dashboard.
To avoid errors when updating your information:
Enter your legal name instead of your business name. A Doing Business As or DBA is not a filing recognized by the IRS. Be sure to enter your full legal name.
If you are recently married, try using your maiden name.
If you have a sole proprietorship, try entering your legal name. Sole proprietorships are generally under the owner’s name versus the business name.
Verify that you are entering information issued by a federal agency such as the IRS or SSA (Social Security Administration) and not a state agency.
Update Taxpayer Identification Number
If you have not yet entered your business’ taxpayer information, by default your Square account is associated with your legal name and SSN.
Sign in to your Square Dashboard and select Account & Settings > Business > Tax Forms.
Select the location you want to update.
Enter your updated taxpayer information so your Square business name matches what the IRS has on file. If applicable, you can replace your legal name with your business’ name and enter your EIN in the SSN ON FILE field.
Correct your Taxpayer Identification Number
If your TIN does not match IRS records, you may receive a B Notice from our Tax team notifying you via letter and email with the required due date to update your information. The process for submitting documentation for a B Notice will vary depending on your account. For instruction on what to do next, refer to the letter or email you received from the Square Tax team.
