Alaska Employer Tax Information
About Alaska employer tax information
With Square, you can run payroll, pay your taxes and stay ahead of the compliance to focus on running your business. This guide is intended for your state taxes only. It’s important to note that laws vary by jurisdiction, and this guide does not attempt to address all jurisdictions or federal taxes — for example, counties or cities often have requirements that differ from federal and state law.
Before you begin
To sign up for Square Payroll in Alaska, you must provide a valid Alaska Employer Account Number and your Employer Unemployment Insurance (UI) Contribution rate.
You are responsible for ensuring Square Payroll has the correct Employer UI Contribution rate for your business.
The fastest way to get an Employer Account Number is to register online at the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development website. You will receive your eight-digit (XXXXXXXX) Employer Account Number and your Employer UI Contribution rate once you complete registration.
You can also contact the Department of Labor and Workforce Development (DOL) by calling 888-448-3527.
You can locate your Employer Account Number if you’ve filed state payroll tax returns in the past. If your number is 5 or 6 digits long, add leading zeros to the front of the number.

Make unemployment insurance tax filings in Alaska
Unemployment insurance tax reports and payments are due by the last day of the month following the end of the calendar quarter (for example, on April 30 for the first quarter). Most employers can file reports and payments online or by mail. Larger employers with 50 or more employees must file online:
To file online:
- Sign in to the MyAlaska website and select Employment Security Tax.
- Select Single Account Filing. You can enter your wages here and also pay any taxes due using Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT).
Each quarter, the Alaska Department of Labor mails contribution reports to all active employers. To file by mail:
- Download Form TQ01C from the Forms and Publications section of the website and include a check for any payments due with your paper report.
Contribution reports are due each quarter as long as your tax account is open. If you paid no wages during the quarter, enter zeros in the lines for reportable and taxable wages and amount remitted, certify and date the report and submit it on time. You are subject to a penalty if you fail to file.
For more information on state unemployment taxes, contact the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce at (907) 465-2757 or esd.tax@alaska.gov.
Amend duplicate tax filings in Alaska
You can review how to amend duplicate filings for state payroll taxes.
The Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development (DOL) allows you to correct any misreported payroll on your Form TQ01C by submitting Form TADJ, Correction of Wage Items.
Here are some general guidelines for completing your adjusted return:
- Download Form TADJ.
- Obtain a copy of the Form TQ01C that was originally filed.
- If Square is attempting to file and we receive a duplicate filing error we do not have the ability to make a payment. The funds are returned to the employer so they can make the payment.
File your Form TADJ with the DOL as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary penalties or fees from underreporting your wages and taxes. If you have any questions on filing your amendment, contact the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development at 888-448-3527 or visit the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development website.
