Accepted Cards
Square works with any Australian-issued and most international chip cards or magstripe cards with a Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and JCB logo, as well as bank-issued eftpos chip cards.
Square also supports Afterpay and mobile wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay.

Accept eftpos Chip Cards
The Square app can process eftpos chip cards on Square Reader, Square Terminal, Square Stand, or Square Register. Cardholders will be prompted to select their preferred account, and enter their PIN when the card is inserted. Learn more about accepting eftpos cards.
Accept Afterpay
With Afterpay, customers can now pay for purchases Online via Square Online or In-person via Square hardware. The transaction limit is $1.00 and $2,000.
For in-person payments, customers can add Afterpay Card to digital wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay. Learn more about Afterpay and Square, including eligibility and pricing.
Accept Mobile Wallet Cards
Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay are acceptable digital wallets for online and in-person transactions. Customers can also use Apple Pay and Google Pay for Square Online purchases, Square Online Checkout Links or to pay invoices with Square.
Note: Digital wallets are not yet accepted on Square Appointments Online Booking Sites.
Accept Prepaid Cards
The Square Point of Sale app can process prepaid cards with the Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and JCB logo.
Accept International Cards
Square can process most internationally-issued cards with a Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and JCB logo. Most card transactions will prompt your customer for a PIN, however, you may be prompted for a signature if you process an international card.
You can also process international cards via manual entry. To manually process an international card, enter the card number, expiration date and CVV.
Keep the following in mind when processing international cards:
While most internationally-issued cards are accepted, processing them is subject to issuer approval. If you experience issues processing an internationally-issued card, have the cardholder contact their issuer.
Cardholders may be charged for currency conversion by their card issuer since payments must be processed in your country’s official currency.
In order to process payments, you need to be located in the country where you activated your Square account.
Other Payment Methods
Zip Pay’s BNPL contactless payment option Tap and Zip is a virtual card accepted on Square hardware.
Your customers will need to activate it through their Zip account. Once they activate it, they can add the digital card to their mobile device via Apple Pay or Google Pay to pay for in-person goods or services.
Note: Zip via in-store barcode is not yet available with Square hardware.
Card Payment Limits
All Square merchants have a per transaction limit of $1.00 minimum and $50,000 maximum for card payments. If you’d like to accept individual card transactions above $50,000 each, you’ll need to split the payment into multiple instalments.
