Create and manage dining options

  • Sellers with items permissions can enable or edit dining options. Sellers with checkout permissions can apply dining options. Set permissions in Square Dashboard.

  • About dining options 

    When you’re ringing up a sale on the Square Point of Sale app or Square for Restaurants app, you can note whether customers are dining in, taking their items to go, or requesting delivery. 

    Your selected dining option will appear in the following places:

    • Customer receipts

    • Order tickets for the kitchen and KDS

    • In-app sales history

    • Advanced reporting and downloadable CSVs from your online Square Dashboard

    Before you begin 

    • You can create a total of ten dining options. 

    • Dining options are saved to your item library and not to any specific device.

    • Dining options aren’t available for online orders placed from your online store or third party orders. Online orders use fulfillment types.

    Manage dining options

    Enable dining options

    1. From your Square Dashboard, select Items > Settings > Dining options.
    2. Click Set Up Dining Options.
    3. Four default options are automatically created when the feature is enabled: For Here, To Go, Delivery, or Pickup.
    4. You can keep the default list or customize your options by toggling options on or off.

    The first dining option listed will be the default for every new sale. Only non-default dining options will show in the order ticket. Dining options are location-specific and you can customize the list for each location.

    Edit dining options

    1. From your Square Dashboard, select Items > Settings > Dining options.
    2. To edit, delete, or create new dining options, click Edit Dining Options and enter a dining option name or make other changes. Click Save.
    3. To rearrange your options, click the three horizontal lines next to the dining option name and drag and drop the option to your preferred order.

    Apply dining options

    For every order placed on the POS, your default dining option is automatically applied to the current ticket.

    Square Point of Sale app

    1. From the open ticket in the app, swipe your finger over the default dining option.
    2. To apply a dining option to a specific item in the cart, tap the item and choose a dining option.
    3. Tap Save.

    Square Restaurants POS app

    1. From the app, select the open ticket in question and tap Actions > Dining Option.
    2. To apply a dining option to a specific item in the cart, tap the item and select Modify.
    3. Choose a dining option and tap Save.
