  • About accepting payments with Square Online

Square Online works with any US-issued and most internationally-issued magstripe or chip cards and supports mobile wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, and Afterpay. Square processes all card types with the same standard rates.

    Before you begin

Before you start accepting payments with Square Online, take a look at Square’s payment processing fees and how processing fees work for more details.

Square Online is automatically configured to use Square’s payment processor to accept card payments during the checkout flow of your site. No additional setup is needed.

You can list your accepted payment methods in the footer of your Square Online site. Learn how to change and edit your website footer in Square Online.

Displaying payment methods in the footer is a requirement to set up Google Product Listings on Square.

    Accept payments with Square Online

    Option 1: Afterpay

Afterpay requires no additional integration with your Square Online site, and gives your customers the flexibility to pay for their orders in 4 interest-free installments over 6 weeks while you get paid the full amount right away. You’ll be automatically enabled to use Afterpay so you can boost online sales, increase average cart size, and attract new customers.

To enable Afterpay for your Square Online site:

    1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and go to Account & Settings > Business information > Payment methods.
    2. Under Afterpay, select ••• > Edit settings.
    3. Toggle ON the Online option > Save.

When toggled on, you can offer Afterpay online acceptance where customers can pay for online orders between $1 to $2,000.

Note: The setting for online payments with Afterpay is global and applies across all Square products that can also take Afterpay payments online. This includes other online platforms such as Square Online Checkout and Virtual Terminal. There isn’t a way to disable Afterpay only for Square Online at this time.

    Option 2: Cash App Pay

Cash App Pay provides a simple way to accept online payments with Cash App. To enable this feature:

    1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Sales channels > Online.
    2. Click Settings > Checkout or Shared Settings > Checkout.
    3. Under Cash App, toggle ON Accept Cash App.

    Option 3: Square Gift Cards

Buyers can use their Square Gift Cards to make purchases on your website. You can also sell gift cards from your Square Online site to drive repeat business.

Option 4: Apple Pay and Google Pay

Apple Pay and Google Pay make checking out from online stores very fast, especially on mobile devices. Square Online allows you to enable digital wallets on your website, helping customers check out quickly and easily.

To enable Apple Pay and Google Pay for your Square Online checkout page:

    1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Sales channels > Online.
    2. Click Settings > Checkout or Shared Settings > Checkout.
    3. Double check that Square is connected as your payment processor.
    4. Toggle ON Accept Apple Pay and/or Accept Google Pay.

Note: Apple Pay and Google Pay are not yet accepted on Square Appointments online booking sites.

You can also let your customers skip checkout and purchase an item directly from an item details page using Apple Pay or Google Pay. This is useful for when buyers intend to buy only that item. To enable this feature:

    1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Sales channels > Online.
    2. Click Settings > Checkout or Shared Settings > Checkout.
    3. Select Edit advanced settings.
    4. Under Pay buttons, check the box to Display the Apple Pay and Google Pay buttons on the item details page.
    5. Select Save.

Once enabled, if a buyer adds items to the cart and then launches Apple Pay or Google Pay directly from the item page, only that item will be purchased. Any items previously added to the cart will not be included in the transaction. When Apple Pay or Google Pay are launched from the shopping cart and buyers go to your site’s checkout page, all items in the cart will be included in the transaction.

    Option 5: PayPal

Square doesn’t charge any additional transaction fees for using PayPal’s payment processor, but PayPal does have its own fees. To learn more about current PayPal transaction fees, contact PayPal’s support team.

To start setup, you’ll need a PayPal Business account. If you don’t already have one, you can convert your personal PayPal account to a Business account or sign up for a new PayPal Business account.

    To accept PayPal payments:

    1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Sales channels > Online.
    2. Click Settings > Checkout or Shared Settings > Checkout.
    3. Under PayPal, select Connect and log in to your PayPal account to authorize the connection to Square Online.

Note: Customers are unable to complete payments for Square Appointments, Square Gift Cards, or local delivery using PayPal with Square Online.

    Saved payment information

Square Pay allows buyers to save and reuse their payment details when ordering from a Square Online site. The saved information is linked to the email and mobile phone number they provide during checkout, and includes their name, address, and payment card details.

When making a purchase from a Square Online site or Square Payment Link, buyers can save their payment information by choosing the Square Pay option during checkout and entering their mobile phone number. They can save their contact information, shipping address, and preferred payment method to their Square profile.

After a buyer opts in to Square Pay, they can access their saved information when ordering from any Square Online site in the future through a confirmation email. Buyers can set it up easily and delete their information at any time.

Note: Square Pay is a buyer-facing feature that can’t be disabled. It’s supported on all Square Online sites.

    Disable online payments

    Square-Online-Stop-Accepting-Payments-EN

You can temporarily suspend accepting payments for orders for your Square Online site. To turn off online orders and suspend taking payments during checkout:

    1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Sales channels > Online.

    2. Click Settings > Checkout or Shared Settings > Checkout.

    3. Toggle OFF Accept online orders.

When this switch is off, items will still be visible on your site but won't be available for purchase. This is helpful when you want to put your online business in vacation mode for any reason so new online orders don't come in while you're away. The toggle also makes it easy to turn things back on once you're ready to get back to business.
