Item options help you create and organise your custom item variations. These options can be reused across your item library, saving time when you add new variations or items.
Options are a set of attributes you can apply to multiple variations in your Item Library. You can quickly create and organise item variations by combining options with just a couple of clicks from the item details page.
For example, let’s say you create two option sets: sizes and colours.
Sizes: Small, medium and large
Colours: Red, blue and green
If you create a new item (e.g. T-shirt), you can apply each option set to create new item variations (e.g. small, green or large, red).
Feature terminology
Variations already exist in Square and define the unique varieties of an item. Each variation can have its own cost, price, SKU, etc. For example, a ‘T-shirt’ can have a Blue, Small variation or a Red, Large variation.
Option sets are attributes that define a variation. The combination of options and their values for an item form the variation. An example would be Size and Colour.
Options are values within the option attribute. Examples include small, medium and large.
Display names are optional names exposed to buyers on channels, such as a website or ordering app. This is helpful if you need four specific ways to communicate ‘size’ (like women’s dress sizes, T-shirt sizes, baby clothing and shoe sizes). Note: The names created for option sets must be unique, and two individual option sets can’t share the same name.
Option set type shows options only in text, or in both text and colour swatch during checkout.
If you need to create many variations quickly – Size, Colour, Width – create item options. Options are applied to items and will create variations that can be sold.
