About shipping-rate profiles

With shipping-rate profiles, you can set up customisable shipping options that automatically apply when a dispatch order is placed. You can create rules to determine shipping rates by country and service levels which determine costs and speed to dispatch.

Before you begin

Shipping rates apply to the delivery destination, not where the order is created.

Shipping settings in Square Online are moving from Square Online to Account & Settings in your Square Dashboard, that way you can manage all dispatches – whether for an in-person or online sale – from one place. More details will be made available about the transition as they come.
  • Square will be moving your Square Online shipping settings from Square Online to Account & Settings in your Square Dashboard. Our goal is to make this transition as seamless as possible.

  • There will be a short period of time where Square Online shipping settings will appear both in Square Online and Account & Settings. We’ll be sure to inform all Square Online sellers when the Square Online shipping settings will be completely deprecated in favour of the ones in Account & Settings.

Step 1: create shipping-rate profile

To start with setting up shipping, you’ll need to create a shipping profile. A shipping profile is a combination of settings that control where and how you’ll dispatch your items. Profiles can be edited or deleted at any time. To set up a shipping profile:

  1. sign in to your Square Dashboard, then go to Account & Settings > Fulfilment > Shipping.

  2. Click Add new profile.

  3. Choose your profile Type from the drop-down menu:

    1. select Order to apply the profile to all orders available for shipping, or

    2. select Item to charge a custom rate or set a destination restriction for individual items.

  4. Enter a shipping profile name. This name won’t be visible to customers.

  5. Click Add countries to select the countries where you offer shipping. Click Done

  6. Click Add rate. Enter the rate name that will be visible to customers at checkout and choose a rate type. Click Done.

  7. Click Save when finished.

You can only assign countries to one profile at a time.

Step 2: add shipping rates

When adding a rate to your shipping profile, which type you choose depends on what you’re sending. You can edit and delete rates at any time.

Free shipping

If you choose Order as your profile type, select Free shipping to create a minimum order threshold for your customers to qualify for free shipping. Use this to give your customers a deal on larger purchases. When you select Free shipping when creating a shipping rate profile:

  1. choose which fulfilment orders are eligible for free shipping: All orders or Based on minimum-order total.
    • If you select Based on minimum-order total, enter the minimum-order total amount required for free shipping. The basket subtotal before discounts, taxes and fees must be equal to or greater than the specified minimum.
  2. Click Done > Save.

Flat rate

If you choose Order as your profile type, select Flat rate to charge customers a single fee based on the type of shipping service they select. This is ideal if you want to keep things simple and know that your shipping costs won’t vary much. When you select Flat rate when creating a shipping rate profile:

  1. enter the Fee you’ll charge customers for shipping.
  2. Click Done > Save.

Order total

If you choose Order as your profile type, select Based on order total to set a shipping fee based on your customer’s total-order cost at checkout. Use this option to discount shipping for customers who spend more than a certain amount on a single order. When you select Based on order total when creating a shipping-rate profile:

  1. create your order total range by entering the starting and ending prices for the range.
  2. Enter a shipping fee for the range.
  3. Click Add row to add another range. ranges cannot have gaps between prices or overlapping prices.
  4. Click Done > Save.

Order weight

If you choose Order as your profile type, select Based on weight total to set a shipping fee based on the weight of all items in an order. This can work well when you dispatch within a limited area. When you select Based on weight total when creating a shipping rate profile:

  1. enter your weight range and the starting and ending shipping prices for the range.
  2. Enter a shipping fee for the range.
  3. Click Add row to add another range. Ranges cannot have gaps between prices or overlapping prices.
  4. Click Done > Save.

Items with no weight data will be assumed to have ‘0’ weight.

To add weights to your items, learn how to create and manage items from Square Dashboard.

Number of items

If you choose Order as your profile type, select Based on number of items to set a shipping fee based on the number of all items in an order. This is helpful if you’re selling items of a similar size and weight and your cost increases when you need to dispatch multiple items. When you select Based on number of items when creating a shipping rate profile:

  1. enter your item range.
  2. Enter a shipping fee for the range.
  3. Click Add row to add another range. Ranges cannot have gaps between prices or overlapping prices.
  4. Click Done > Save.

Item level rate

If you choose Item as your profile type, be sure to click Add items to choose your items for the profile. Then, when adding your rate:

  1. enter a Shipping fee.
  2. Choose a fee option to decide how you want to charge for the rate, either Per order or Per item.
  3. Click Done.
