About Florida employer tax information

Before you begin

To sign up with Square Payroll in Florida, you must provide your Florida Reemployment Tax Account Number and Reemployment Tax Rate.

Florida payroll tax details

Square Payroll processes the following per the frequency for the listed state agencies:

Florida Department of Revenue (DOR)

  • Unemployment Insurance Tax Payment: filed quarterly

  • Employer’s Quarterly Report (RT-6): filed quarterly

  • New Hire Report: filed per new employee

Unemployment insurance payments

To make Florida Reemployment tax payments, you must be registered with the Florida Department of Revenue (DOR) and have a Florida Reemployment Tax Account Number. If you do not have an account number, you can register for one on the Florida DOR website. You can make tax payments online or by mail.

  • To pay online, enroll with the DOR e-Services website. Visit the Florida DOR website for information and instructions for setting up your account.
  • To pay by mail, write a check payable to the Florida U.C. Fund. Make sure to include your Reemployment Tax Account number at the top of your check, and mail your check to:

Make unemployment insurance tax filings in Florida

Form RT-6, Employer’s Quarterly Report

Unemployment insurance tax reports and payments are due by the last day of the month following the end of the calendar quarter (for example, on April 30 for the first quarter). Larger employers with 10 or more employees are required to file reports and payments online. Other employers can file reports and payments online or by mail.

  • To file online, go to the e-Services File and Pay website and pay any taxes due using Automated Clearing House (ACH) debit or credit.
  • To file by mail, the Florida Department of Revenue mails wage report forms to all employers eligible each quarter. You can also download Form RT-6. Include a check for any payments due with your paper report.

You must file a report every quarter regardless of employment activity. If you had no employees for a particular quarter or all wages for a particular quarter exceeded the wage base (excess wages), you still must file a report. You will be subject to a penalty if you fail to file.

Amend duplicate tax filings in Florida

Form RT-6, Employer’s Quarterly Tax Return

The Florida Department of Revenue (DOR) allows you to correct any misreported payroll on your Form RT-6 by submitting Form RT-8A. Here are some general guidelines for completing your adjusted return:

  • Sign in to the Reemployment Tax website to file electronically or download Form RT-8A to file by mail.
  • Obtain a copy of the Form RT-6 that was originally filed. This is necessary to fill out the “Previously reported” section of your amended return.
  • Submit your completed return online or by mailing to the address listed on the form.

File your Form RT-8A with the DOR as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary penalties or fees from underreporting your wages and taxes. If you have any questions, contact the Florida Department of Revenue at 850-717-6628 or Florida Department of Revenue website.

You must provide your Reemployment Tax Rate to Square Payroll so we can accurately calculate this tax.

Register for a Florida Reemployment Tax Account Number

The easiest way to get a Reemployment Tax Account Number is to register for an online account with the Florida Department of Revenue (DOR). Once you enroll, you’ll receive your 7-digit Reemployment Tax Account Number.

Find your existing Florida Reemployment Tax Account Number

If you are transitioning to Square Payroll from a different payroll provider (or have filed state payroll tax returns in the past), your Reemployment Tax Account Number is on any previously submitted quarterly tax filing (Form RT-6). The Reemployment Tax Account Number is a seven-digit number in the following format: XXXXXXX.
