Important changes to your Square Online Overview page
About the changes to your Square Online Overview page
You may have received multiple notifications about different sections of your Square Online Overview page moving to other parts of Square Dashboard. Here, we’ll outline how these changes impact you and your workflows so that you can find the features you need to manage your Square Online site.
Before you begin
Be sure to review any emails you've received from Square about these changes to see how they apply to your account.
Understand the changes
You’ve given us feedback that managing your in-person and online sales hasn’t always been easy. For example, historically, when you added a new item to your catalogue, you needed to categorize it for use with in-person selling, but it also needed to be categorized separately for use with your Square Online site. Our goal is to eliminate any repetitive workflows like this from Square Online. The more cohesive Square products and tools are for you, the less time you spend doing the same work in multiple places.
Each section of the Square Online Overview page will be transferred independently over the course of 2024, with all changes targeted for completion by the end of the year.
The following tabs of the left-hand navigation menu on your Square Online Overview page will be moved to other parts of Square Dashboard:
- Site Items and Site Categories (found under Items)
- Sales Taxes (found under Settings or Shared Settings)
- Coupons (found under Items or Shared Settings)
- Fulfillment
- Orders
- Reports
While some features may look slightly different when moved, nearly all features and functionality for Square Online site items, site categories, sales taxes, coupons, fulfillment, orders and reporting will function the same. However, some little-used features and functionality will be removed during this transition.
Historically, item management has lived in two places: the Items section of your Square Online Overview page and the Items section of your Square Item Library. Site items, site categories, options and item preferences will all be transitioning to your Square Item Library. This means you’ll be able to manage all aspects of your items, including any features specific to Square Online, from one place.
- Items: While many item details (like item name and price) were already in sync between your Square Item Library and Square Online, not all details were. Additionally, some details only lived in Square Online. We’ve been transferring all of the Square Online specific details throughout much of 2023 and 2024 so that you can manage your items exclusively from your Item Library. Learn how to Manage Square Online item settings for more information.
- Categories: The set of categories in your Square Item Library and the site categories in your Square Online Overview page have never been in sync, and you’ve had to maintain separate category lists between the two. We’ve been building up the features and functionality of the Item Library categories so you can rearrange and nest categories, assign an item to multiple categories and set the online visibility of a category. Your Square Online categories can now be transferred to your Item Library categories so you can manage all categories from one place. Learn about these Important changes to your Square Online site categories for more details.
- Item preferences and sync settings: The home for many of your Square Online item preferences and item sync settings is moving so that you control how items are represented on your Square Online website from the same place you manage your items. Attributes like your preferred default item type, default item fulfillment methods, default item site visibility and default site assignment will move to your Item Library under Settings > Item defaults. We’ll transfer your existing default settings to your Square Item Library with no disruption to your Square Online website or item management. You can change these default settings at any time. To learn more, check out how to Configure item default settings.
Historically, Square has had two different places for setting up and managing taxes for your online and point of sale orders: the Sales Taxes section of your Square Online Overview page and the Sales Taxes section of your Account & Settings page. Now, the home for managing taxes, no matter the channel, will be in Account & Settings. Learn how to Manage sales tax settings for Square Online orders for additional details.
Note: These changes will affect different countries throughout the course of 2024. You may not see these changes take effect just yet.
The home for creating and managing coupons is moving from Square Online to Square Marketing. This change will let you manage and edit your coupons in one central location for use across your Square Online website and other Square products. Learn how to Create discounts and coupons for Square Online items for more details.
Note: Creating and managing coupons from Square Marketing for use with your website and point of sale is free and doesn’t require a subscription.
The home for Square Online fulfillment settings is moving from the Fulfillment section of your Square Online Overview page to the Fulfillment section of your Account & Settings page. Pickup and delivery settings can already be accessed there. All shipping settings for Square Online orders will move later in 2024.
Note: You won’t be able to apply the same fulfillment settings for Square Online orders to orders created from your Square Point of Sale at this time. We’re working to bring all current features and functionality for shipping, pickup and local delivery from Square Online to Account & Settings so that your fulfillment settings apply to both in-person and online orders.
Historically, Square has had two places to manage orders: Orders in your Square Online Overview page and Orders in your Square Order Manager. While orders from Square Online have always fed into your Square Order Manager, some features and functionality were available only in Square Online. We’ve now added those features and functionality to Square Order Manager as well so you can manage all of your orders from one place. Learn more about these Important changes to your Square Online order manager for details.
The home for Square Online insights and reporting is transitioning from Square Online to Square Reports in Dashboard to enable you to view all reporting in one place. You’ve always been able to view your online orders as part of your overall Square sales reports, and the new channel filters will help you focus on your site-specific data.
We’re also launching a new Square Online section on your Square Reports page. It includes two new pages—the Purchase funnel report and the Traffic & sources report—for insights specific to your online business (like conversion rate and site traffic). As before, these two reports are only available when you upgrade your Square Online subscription.
While report access is moving to a centralized location in Dashboard, please note the following:
- Historical cart and category data will not be migrated.
- Historical abandoned cart email performance data will not be migrated.
- If you have multiple sites in Square Online, only data after January 1, 2021 can be filtered by site in Square Reports.
