  • Does Square Reader require Wi-Fi?

    Square Reader requires an internet connection. Connect Square Reader to the internet through a Wi-Fi network. No Wi-Fi? You can use offline payments² to keep taking payments for up to 24 hours. Additional terms apply.

  • Does Square Reader need to be charged?

    Square Reader does need to be charged. Once charged, the battery lasts all day.

  • Does Square Reader accept contactless and chip & PIN card payments?

    Yes. Square Reader accepts chip cards, contactless (NFC) cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay.

  • How do I set up Square Reader?

    To connect to Square Reader, press and release the button on your reader to turn it on. Go to your device settings and make sure Bluetooth is turned on. Open the Square App and tap the three horizontal lines in the bottom-right corner to navigate to the menu. Tap Settings > Hardware > Square Reader > Connect a Reader.

    Square Reader does not hold any account information (it’s all contained on the Square App), so you can pair multiple readers with the same device and take payments all the same without any complications. The reader can be used with multiple devices, but it only connects with one device at a time.

    Square Reader requires an internet connection to process payments. You can use Wi-Fi, hotspot or mobile data.

  • How do I take payments with Square Reader?

    You can accept contactless and chip + PIN payments easily once you have your Square Reader connected to your mobile device. Once it’s connected, all you need to do is open up the Square app, finalise your sale and then tap Charge. Your customer then either taps or inserts their card to make the payment. When you see four green lights on the reader and a confirmation message in the app, the payment has successfully completed.

    Security is engineered into every Square product from the ground up. Square performs data encryption within the card reader at the time of payment.

    Accepting chip + PIN payments with Square Reader is easy and secure. First make sure your Reader is connected to your device, then open the Square App, finalise your sale and tap Charge. Insert the chip + PIN card (chip-side first with the front of the card facing up) into the wide port on the top of your reader and turn the screen of your mobile device to your customer for secure PIN entry.

    Once the PIN has been entered, make sure your customer has touched the blue tick button. When you see four green lights on the reader and a confirmation message in the app, the payment has successfully completed and you can remove the card.

    Funds are delivered by default as fast as the next day. You can also customise your transfer schedule to suit the needs of your business.

  • Do I need to pair Square Reader to my device again if I temporarily stop using it?

    Reader will stay connected to make a sale without needing to pair your reader again.
